Learning of the Week No. 2
Learnings I have this week were beyond expectations. Though I can personally say that with the experiences I have and with this doctoral study endeavor I am up right now, I can at least say that I’m quite prepared to face the challenges of this 21st century educational scenario. However, after the very meaty discussions, I have realized that I still have a lot of things to update and work on to for me to be able to deliver the quality teaching in which the students rightfully deserved. I was quite intrigued with the implementation of peer-tutoring, it seems interesting to apply because in my years of teaching I haven’t done it yet, and for me, I guess it is high time to utilize its effectiveness in my instruction. Another thing that I promise to religiously apply in my class is the profiling of my students. During the class, I was so disappointed and felt guilty about the importance of the surveys which are needed to be done before the whole school year commences, and to be honest, in my years of teaching, I haven’t tried it. During the class discussion, I caught myself contemplating and silent the moment Doc Fabros told us that she have read a book that says “10% of the class are special learners”, and by that it made me even more motivated to do the profiling so that I can better provide and deliver instruction based on the students’ needs and interests. On the other hand, on the topic about moral theories, I have learned that in order for you to have a good and sound judgment about different acts, you need to at least utilize different theories of morality. You can never always use Hume’s theory, neither Kant nor Hobbes’ theory to perceive single act or situation. Hence, a combination of all theories should be applied. Moreover, I was also reminded this week to maintain high moral conducts and principles as public officials to preserve trust and dignity. In all our dealings, we must bear in our minds that as public trust, we have ethical values and standards that we need to observe.
The learnings I have this week were enormously helpful for me as a public school teacher. I was informed about the things I need to avoid to, to get rid with any conflicts that may arise during my term at the same time about the value of morality not just as a teacher but as a human.
At the end of the class, I have realized that there are many teachers out there who are actually uninformed, I must say, about the things they are supposed to have known, like the different legal provisions, the code of conducts and the like. Hence, strengthening and improving the Induction program for teachers must be done, and the program should include basic legal provisions as mandated by laws that teachers need to adhere to. Another thing that I’d like to react is about the Child Protection Policy, yes it exists and It has been practiced by all schools, but the problem here now is, how about the teachers? Is there a thing like “Teacher Protection Policy”?. I must comment on this issue, because I have known several teachers being bullied by students and perhaps I was being bullied too without my knowledge. What I mean is, if the Department is so keen about this children protection thing, they must also do it to teachers, at least both parties are protected and by that the process of teaching and learning will effectively take place. Like for instance, I have this colleague who was always subject to bullying, because of his stature and walking disability. I have been reprimanding the students when I heard something bad from the students, but I cannot fully reprimand them because no provisions will help me win stand because the system is mostly student-centered and child-friendly. And I hope someday soonest, a policy that also favors teachers must be realized. Good thing, there is now a so called “Student Discipline and Teacher Protection Act”, HB 5735, it is still an act but it gives hope to every teachers who have been suffering and struggling everyday with these student-bullies.
Additional information that I think necessary to emphasize here is the word maxim. Long before, I have heard of this word but if somebody will ask me its meaning, I can never give an answer. Theory supports that when you repeat the idea or information more often, tendency is greater retention, more so if you write it. Hence, here it is, “Maxim”, it is a general truth, fundamental principle and rule of conduct.
