Social and Moral Philosophy
FINAL EXAMINATION

1.   Ethics and values are sometimes used synonymously but they actually differ and are indispensable. Ethics are set of values that govern the behavior of individuals and it is based from the norms of a certain group while values are the principles and ideals of individuals which play a vital role in judging what is more important. Ethics are true to all individuals belonging to a certain group while values differ from person to person. Ethics will tell us the wrongness and badness of certain act but values will tell us what we want to achieve. Hence, ethics is something that will determine the quality of our values and therefore both are related and indispensable.
2.   The following are the common Filipino values:
-Hospitality. This value lives forever in the heart of Filipinos as it has been our favorite tourism slogan and it exists.
-Respect. Some say it’s fading as millennials are not practicing “po and opo” as sign of respect but I should gladly say that other evolving gestures of respect are evident to young Filipinos nowadays.
-Strong family ties and religions. This is always very true and will never surely fades as family centered values and God-centered practices are evident among Filipinos.
-Generosity and Helpfulness. When a neighbor is in trouble, Filipinos are always ready to help them.
-Strong Work Ethic. Yes, we are hardworking people to the point that we are willing to work almost the whole day just to feed our families
2.1. The following are the values we are not practicing:
-Unity in Bayanihan Spirit. Filipinos nowadays are very focused with their own personal agenda and we sometimes forget that others need us sometimes.
-Thriftiness. This is my personal opinion only, and I believe some are not very wise in spending their resources that leads them to borrowing money and put them on debt trap.
-Honesty. My standard for honesty is the way Japanese people do it and when I try to compare Filipinos and Japanese in terms of honesty it’s completely different.
-Delicadeza. This value is rarely observed among Filipinos especially among politicians, for as long as something is beneficial for them, they will really do what it takes even at the expense of their dignity and honor.
-Resourcefulness and Creativity. With the advent of technology and internet, Filipinos will just tend to copy something because of laziness.
2.2. The values of Filipinos are unique and special as those are influenced by our history, culture and norms. Even if it is constantly evolving with time, it is still distinct and its taste of Filipino will never diminish. Like the case of politeness as our treasured Filipino value, we might sometimes say that it was lost, but the way younger generations show their polite gestures is still evident but it has now evolved. The forgotten gesture of saying “po and opo” has now evolved as younger generations tend to bow and utter the sweetest words of respect in their local dialect. Hence, Filipino values are still alive but I believe it is constantly evolving.
2.3. Yes, values can be categorized into two, bad and wrong. Good values are something that we need to instill to our students and develop while bad values are something we need to cut off from our culture. For instance, the values of procrastination, crab-mentality, what goes around-comes around mentality are really bad and something we need to stop. And, the values like hospitality, strong-family ties and respect should flourish and be more evident to every Filipinos. Therefore, as an educator, developing the values which are really relevant for the students to become highly moral must be given focus and attention and those are the values we consider as good.
B. Although both acts are considered immoral, however, one act in the situation can be justified at least as less immoral. First person is absolutely immoral and unacceptable, it’s like committing two mortal sin in one act. Evil really it is, especially when one commits immoral act just to satisfy another immoral act (intention is really evil). On the other hand, the second person is exactly what Robin Hood does, yet is sounds acceptable and less immoral compared to the first person but the idea of stealing is never a moral act. To conclude, both are actually not moral but the second one I must say can be acceptable especially when the money are stolen from corrupt filthy rich politicians.
C. I will based my opinion on the lessons I have learned from the class. I must say, it is both a criminal act and an immoral act, criminal act because it is against the law, and when one violates a law it is criminal in nature. It is also immoral act because it is never a moral act or answer to solve problem and the divine law never allows it. Though, we can never blame the victims of suicides as the situations vary from person to person. However, to answer whether it is criminal or immoral, it is definitely both.
D. This question is very subjective in nature. But for me, I’m against it, because the way I see it is mainly influenced by the religious-family background I have and the law of God never allows it. For me, never can a person be destined to someone with the same sex, it’s never compatible and if it does exist, I believe someone suffers. Not both parties will be happy, and in my opinion one party in a same-sex relationship is being compromised and suffering. Homosexuals can be happy even without marriage, and it’s my opinion.
E. Putting an end to a life is never a moral act. However, some acts can be justified. It is very immoral when you aborted the child out of irresponsible sex and sex before marriage. It is even immoral when someone will just decide to abort the child because she doesn’t want responsibility and such cases are still existing nowadays. However, there are cases where we can say, abortion is a better option and can fall into category of acceptable or moral act. For instance, a choice to abort is the only option just to save the mom carrying the child in the womb who was known to have inborn defects, and persisting would cost a mother’s life. Another case would be, by accident, when a mother unknowingly and unintentionally harm her child inside her womb, though it’s unacceptable but the parents were left with no options as it would harm both the child and the mother. Hence, the choice of aborting the child can be a moral act.
